Shop For Apple iPod touch 64 GB (3rd Generation) NEWEST MODEL

I've owned both the iPod Touch 1G and 2G before, and just bought the 32GB model from the Apple store last night. My experiences with iPod Touches has been nothing short of amazing, and while I love my new toy, I am a little disappointed that there isn't much offered in the way of improvements. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it for people who've never owned the Touch since it is a great device, but this is just not worth buying if you owned a previous model.

THE IPOD TOUCH HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT DEVICE
(1) Its touchscreen input is amazing; even though more and more competitors tout touchscreens now, very few seem to have 'gotten it right' ... my LG Dare, for example, is also a touchscreen MP3 player, but I find it incredibly frustrating to input text accurately, or to accurately navigate through menus.

(2) It's web-integration is seamless. It is a breeze as it's incredibly intuitive. Surfing the web on other internet capable devices I've been shocked to see how sub-par the internet experience is. The iPod Touch is really like a portable computer.

(3) The app store is truly amazing. Since it's been around for a while now, there is a wide selection of different programs available for download. It is important to stress that competitors to the iPod Touch, even if they do have their own app stores (Windows Marketplace, for example) do NOT offer such a comprehensive selection of apps...(yet?).

IMPROVEMENTS OVER PREVIOUS MODELS
Even though this new model doesn't sport a camera like I had hoped, it does feature some improvements. For starters, the increased storage space is convenient, since 32GB means you can hold more music, videos, apps, but if space was never an issue for you, you might as well go for the 8GB 2G. Aside from increased storage space, the new model features a faster processor, although don't see much of a difference with, but am sure with very intensive games that are scheduled to be released like Assassin's Creed or Grant Theft Auto, the difference will be noticeable.The earbuds have a microphone, which is useful for some apps, but since I usually use my Skullcandy SCS-SCBP3.5 Skullcrushers Subwoofer Stereo Headphones (Black Pinstripe) anyway, I probably won't utilize the mic that much. Also, this new device apparently has a chip for Wireless N and FM Radio, although the software doesn't yet support this (meaning that perhaps with a software update these two features would be available). N networks are much faster than the Wireless G standard.

SHORTCOMINGS
NO CAMERA! I was reading a lot about the rumors surrounding the iPod Touch, and was really excited that there was supposed to be a camera. Granted, it wouldn't be capable of amazing pictures (I've seen the iPhone's camera in action, and it wasn't anything special), but it's still convenient to have a camera on such a powerful device that can access the internet. Unfortunately, there was no camera. But tear-ups of the device available on the Internet show that there is space for one, which means that perhaps on future models they'll be available.

STILL NO PHYSICAL KEYBOARD I own the Sony MYLO, and while I strongly dislike the device as a whole, I absolutely love that in addition to its touchscreen interface, it has a flip-out QWERTY keyboard. The lack of a physical keyboard on the Touch definitely does make inputting large amounts of text difficult. But for short emails and simple web-surfing, the Touch's onscreen keyboard is just fine.

A FEW FINAL NOTES
THE 8GB '3G' IS REALLY A REPACKAGED 2G: I bought the 32GB model because the 8GB, even though being labeled '3rd generation' is simply a 2nd generation 8GB model repackaged as 3G. There is no discernible difference between this and the previous generation; the '3G' is simply priced cheaper. Therefore, if you wanted an iPod Touch before but couldn't afford one, the 8GB might be ideal for you now. But since I wanted something new and different (having owned previous models), I got the 32GB model which features 4 times the storage space as the cheaper one, a faster processor, and earbuds that feature a microphone.

64GB MODEL HAS MORE STORAGE, BUT NO ADDITIONAL IMPROVEMENTS OVER 32GB MODEL: I didn't think that the 64GB model was worth it, since you're basically paying more for more storage space alone (and no other added features); since I didn't have problems managing space on my Touch, I didn't feel I needed the extra 32GB. Others might find the extra space useful, but like I said, there is no improvement between the middle (32GB) and top (64GB) pricing tiers aside from storage space.

FINAL THOUGHTS AND CONCLUSIONS
If you never owned an iPod Touch and want to finally see what everyone's been raving about, you can now buy one for much cheaper than was previously available. If you, however, already own an iPod Touch, the 3rd generation is not different enough to justify buying it. Perhaps if next year's model has a camera (like this one was rumored to have), or if there is a considerable improvement of another sort, then pull the trigger; until then, your current 1G or 2G should be sufficient.
