Just got my first iPod, a 32GB Touch. Probably the best user interface on any similar product. Bright, clear screen, amazing graphics, no learning curve for navigating the device. Connects easily to WiFi, voice recognition works well. Browser works well, given the constraints of a HVGA screen. Mike in the earbuds is very clear. Gets four stars instead of five because:

-Back cover looks great out of the package, scratches incredibly easily
-Speaker is a nice touch, but not good quality and too low volume
-Ear buds don't fit well in my ears
-Hardly any bass with ear buds, even after punching up with equalizer

All in all, very nice for reading email, browsing the web not bad with WiFi, VoIP is fine, great for YouTube type of videos, watching movies is acceptable.

Really wish the mic was in the unit, and that GPS had been included, but a very nice unit anyway. I had this product two days. The first day I put music on it and I was content with the layout and screen. The second day I went to the app store. In opening one of the apps onto the iPod - iTouch, iTunes froze, and froze my computer. I had to reboot the computer by pushing and holding the power ON button. When getting iTunes running again, iTunes said that the iPod needed to be restored. I did this. It told me the same thing over and over again. In short I tried to recover to the factory settings, a number of times, I tried to uninstall iTunes, and install it again, (3 or 4 times), I tried it on a different computer, an older one I have. The last outcome was that the firmware is corrupt. Lastly I drove 20 miles to an Apple store, which they told me I needed an appointment, (the soonest they had was three hours from when I was there), and they told me to return it to Amazon. I also heard I did everything they would have recommended. I am VERY, VERY unhappy with Apple. I stormed out of there saying I will NEVER buy anything from Apple again! My computer had to be restored to an earlier time because of installing iTunes. This is my first and last Apple product. If they can't even help you in the store after driving 20 miles, then they don't get my business. I was worried Amazon would make it difficult to return this "paperweight" but the process wasn't what I have read in the past. Thank you Amazon. Too bad, it looked like a nice player. It just needed to NOT be dependent on iTunes. I never liked iTunes. And it needs a reset button on the player itself like most others. What I intended to use this device for besides the obvious:

- Check my email accounts with a touch of a button
- Surf the internet with ease
- PDF Reader
- CHM File reader

This device has exceeded my expectations. A built-in video camera and mic would have been useful. I'll be peeved if they release the video camera version by Christmas.

Web browsing is pretty fast now that I changed my wireless encryption to WEP. WPA encryption slows it down considerably for some reason. Well, at least for me it does.

Pros:
- Satisfies basic computer usage(Saves me from booting up my PC downstairs.)
- Lots of apps, some are free. (PDF reader, ichm, Taskmaster,etc.)
- 32GB storage is more than enough for me. I still have 27GB left!
- Portability
- Charges fairly fast.

Cons:
- Battery life.
- Doesn't come with wall charger
- Speaker sound quality is bad.
- Ear phones are bad.
- Fingerprint magnet
- I would've liked a built-in FM transmitter. Most PMP devices have them nowadays.

Introduction

This 32GB iPod Touch is replacing my daughter's 30GB iPod Video. She loves my 32GB iPhone 3GS because of all of the applications that are available. Many games run from $0.99 to $9.99 in iTunes. Some games are actually free. In addition, because of the amount of space, there is ample room for movies, songs, podcasts and lots of apps.

Design

The size and weight of the 3rd Generation iPod Touch is unchanged. When compared to the iPhone, this unit is slimmer in size and certainly easier to hold for my daughter. The use of the Touch is intuitive, and there are numerous 'screens' that can hold 16 apps on each page. This is essentially just like an iPhone when it comes to WIFI and Bluetooth capabilities. Side by side comparison, the Touch edges out the iPhone 3GS for loading apps and connectivity to the internet.

Setting up connectivity with the wireless network (I use an Apple Time Capsule) is intuitive and I was up and running on the internet in less than 1 minute. Web browsing can be facilitated through portrait or landscape mode. Applications can be directly downloaded into the device.

Quality of the movie resolution is excellent, and this makes a good travel companion for long car rides or cross country airplane rides.

Applications

There is a base of applications that come with the Touch, such as a calendar, mail, voice memos, Notepad, Photos, YouTube, Google Maps, Weather, Stocks, Clock, Calculator, Safari and the App Store. With so many apps being released daily, there are apps for any category that you can imagine.

However, to facilitate this as a learning tool, I have installed applications on Hindi, the World Maps, Presidents, a Dictionary and Thesaurus, Radio Disney, a TV Guide (iTV), Voice Over IP application, Movie Times, and guides to planets/constellations. Additionally, she has Quick Office which allows her to type her stories on MS Word.

She has a Vista Laptop; however, I run a Macbook Pro and sync her iPod Touch with that. With the new operating system which is already installed, there is greater flexibility for arranging apps right through iTunes.

This is my first Ipod and it's really impressive. Alot of good ideas went into this. What I'm not crazy about is Itunes. Not for an advance computer user. Not enough control. Can't even get into the subfolder levels to select images to import. If you're files are all set up the way Windows does things for you, you'll be fine. If you've got things set up your own way to be better organized you'll be alittle irritated. So, like everyone else, I was hoping for a camera. didn't even want a camcorder, just a still camera, but alas it was not to be. Then had to debate whether or not to go ahead and get the touch anyway or not. After
Amazon dropped the price $20, decided to go ahead and get it.

This thing is amazing. I still can't believe all the things it can do. I have never had a device with a touch screen before, so maybe I'm easily impressed. One of the big selling points for me for this was the app store. Didn't need a smart phone (and didn't want to be pay for more than the basic monthly fees for phone service) so that ruled out the iphone. When you hear in the commercial "we have an app for that", it doesn't seem to be that far from the truth. Truly makes the touch a multipurpose too. There are several apps I can use at work as well as home.

Of course it has all my music and podcasts on as well. I've downloaded a number of free games for my kids to play, and the fact that this thing has wifi for internet surfing is a major plus as well. Especially like that I can find directions on Google maps, and it will save my them (at least for last search) even when I'm offline. Should make finding my son's away football games much easier.

I went to Victoria Garden Apple Store to listen new iPod touch 3rd gen 32gb with my Ultimate Ear ue11pro, Shure E500, Monter Turbine, and Sennheiser IE8. Even these highest quality in-ear monitors can not make iPod Touch 3 sound good. ue11pro is a 1.1k+ in-ear monitor, and usually it can make worst MP3 player sounds pretty good. Not in this case, even ue11pro can not make iPod Touch 3 sound good.

iPod Touch 3 sounds very thin, no detail, weak bass, no extension on low and high, shrink mid, small space... it just bad bad bad!

I've owned both the iPod Touch 1G and 2G before, and just bought the 32GB model from the Apple store last night. My experiences with iPod Touches has been nothing short of amazing, and while I love my new toy, I am a little disappointed that there isn't much offered in the way of improvements. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it for people who've never owned the Touch since it is a great device, but this is just not worth buying if you owned a previous model.

THE IPOD TOUCH HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT DEVICE
(1) Its touchscreen input is amazing; even though more and more competitors tout touchscreens now, very few seem to have 'gotten it right' ... my LG Dare, for example, is also a touchscreen MP3 player, but I find it incredibly frustrating to input text accurately, or to accurately navigate through menus.

(2) It's web-integration is seamless. It is a breeze as it's incredibly intuitive. Surfing the web on other internet capable devices I've been shocked to see how sub-par the internet experience is. The iPod Touch is really like a portable computer.

(3) The app store is truly amazing. Since it's been around for a while now, there is a wide selection of different programs available for download. It is important to stress that competitors to the iPod Touch, even if they do have their own app stores (Windows Marketplace, for example) do NOT offer such a comprehensive selection of apps...(yet?).

IMPROVEMENTS OVER PREVIOUS MODELS
Even though this new model doesn't sport a camera like I had hoped, it does feature some improvements. For starters, the increased storage space is convenient, since 32GB means you can hold more music, videos, apps, but if space was never an issue for you, you might as well go for the 8GB 2G. Aside from increased storage space, the new model features a faster processor, although don't see much of a difference with, but am sure with very intensive games that are scheduled to be released like Assassin's Creed or Grant Theft Auto, the difference will be noticeable.The earbuds have a microphone, which is useful for some apps, but since I usually use my Skullcandy SCS-SCBP3.5 Skullcrushers Subwoofer Stereo Headphones (Black Pinstripe) anyway, I probably won't utilize the mic that much. Also, this new device apparently has a chip for Wireless N and FM Radio, although the software doesn't yet support this (meaning that perhaps with a software update these two features would be available). N networks are much faster than the Wireless G standard.

SHORTCOMINGS
NO CAMERA! I was reading a lot about the rumors surrounding the iPod Touch, and was really excited that there was supposed to be a camera. Granted, it wouldn't be capable of amazing pictures (I've seen the iPhone's camera in action, and it wasn't anything special), but it's still convenient to have a camera on such a powerful device that can access the internet. Unfortunately, there was no camera. But tear-ups of the device available on the Internet show that there is space for one, which means that perhaps on future models they'll be available.

STILL NO PHYSICAL KEYBOARD I own the Sony MYLO, and while I strongly dislike the device as a whole, I absolutely love that in addition to its touchscreen interface, it has a flip-out QWERTY keyboard. The lack of a physical keyboard on the Touch definitely does make inputting large amounts of text difficult. But for short emails and simple web-surfing, the Touch's onscreen keyboard is just fine.

A FEW FINAL NOTES
THE 8GB '3G' IS REALLY A REPACKAGED 2G: I bought the 32GB model because the 8GB, even though being labeled '3rd generation' is simply a 2nd generation 8GB model repackaged as 3G. There is no discernible difference between this and the previous generation; the '3G' is simply priced cheaper. Therefore, if you wanted an iPod Touch before but couldn't afford one, the 8GB might be ideal for you now. But since I wanted something new and different (having owned previous models), I got the 32GB model which features 4 times the storage space as the cheaper one, a faster processor, and earbuds that feature a microphone.

64GB MODEL HAS MORE STORAGE, BUT NO ADDITIONAL IMPROVEMENTS OVER 32GB MODEL: I didn't think that the 64GB model was worth it, since you're basically paying more for more storage space alone (and no other added features); since I didn't have problems managing space on my Touch, I didn't feel I needed the extra 32GB. Others might find the extra space useful, but like I said, there is no improvement between the middle (32GB) and top (64GB) pricing tiers aside from storage space.

FINAL THOUGHTS AND CONCLUSIONS
If you never owned an iPod Touch and want to finally see what everyone's been raving about, you can now buy one for much cheaper than was previously available. If you, however, already own an iPod Touch, the 3rd generation is not different enough to justify buying it. Perhaps if next year's model has a camera (like this one was rumored to have), or if there is a considerable improvement of another sort, then pull the trigger; until then, your current 1G or 2G should be sufficient. For all those on the fence out there - waiting for a new iPod Touch with a camera or buy the newest ones just released, I love my new 64GB Touch. It is faster than the older 2nd generation Touch, and the Voice Control features works in my car to control the music, hooked up to a cable connect and the headphones at the same time.

I give it 5 stars because it is what I wanted - an iPod Touch large enough to hold my 40gb of music, with Voice control in the car so I can control it hands free. I don't need a video camera - I have a video camera. I don't need a still camera - my cell phone does this. I don't need VOIP, my cell phone works just fine. And I don't need GPS, I like the current one I have. I would love those features - trust me, I had a tiny bit of envy when the Nano came out with a camera and the touch didn't (please tell me I wasn't the only one to get that pun).. But I don't love those feature enough to wait for them, or enough to terminate my contract with Verizon and just get an iPhone.

BUT - this might be important for those on the fence. No matter what Amazon calls it, or even CNET reviews, this is not the 3rd generation iPod Touch. Apple is calling it the "current generation" or the "newest generation", only to eventually call it the 2nd generation. It's a product designed for portability, simplicity, and ease of use. Icons and "touch" are the principle for its design and use. I find it an excellent product when all you do is using your fingers to select objects and to scroll or enlarge the page you are on. Touching is not meant to replace typing; in other words, this device is better for reading and watching than for typing or large data input. I've had my ipod touch for two days now (and played with it for two days). Since there are many, many reviews written about the technology etc, I won't write about that. Let me state first that I did some reading on the subject before I bought the ipod and that my main goal was to have an MP3 player with enough GB to contain all my music and some of my video's and have a small carryable 'computerlike device' for internet and mail (at home, at work and on vacation since most hotels have free WiFi for guest nowadays).

I'll write a review from a user's point of view. And more important, I think I'm just an average user and a first time Ipod touch user (I already owned an ipod classic though).

On the very positive side:

I wasn't looking for a cell phone or a camera (could have bought the Iphone then), since I already own fine working devices for both (who wants a 3 megapixel camera on a phone anyway if you own a credit card sized 12.1 megapixel camera, which can make video's in HD quality at the same time and I never use the camera on my cell phone for that reason). Sure, you have to carry more devices in your bag, but that's the choice you make for quality especially as regards the camera and video.

The problem with multi tasking small devices in my opinion is that normally you have everything in a poor to reasonable and nothing in excellent quality. Not so the Ipod Touch 3rd gen.

First I think it is a great gadget and more. I've had no trouble whatsoever to install and use it, without having to refer to the manual at any time. I am lucky to have WiFi everywhere I'm in a building (at home, work, hotels, my parents etc), so e-mail and internet is no problem. I installed skype, which works fine and I even free installed software for traffic news and since I live in the Netherlands, something called 'uitzending gemist'. I can watch missed TV programmes on streaming video, which to my surprise really works great. I've tried everything I could 'click' on and while I won't use everything on a regular basis, it all works fine except for some (minor) points you can read in my review further on.
You can listen to the music without the earphones, which is quite nice (but don't expect great sound quality, just good enough to listen to video's and TV)
And since I have small hands, I have no problems entering a text. But I imagine someone with bigger hands could have some problems there (but hey what do you expect, we want devices as small as this and expect them to do everything and anything??).
Loading internet pages, sending email and getting e-mail: very fast! One of the many surprises.

Compared to the ipod classic it is great to have this big screen and it is easier to use.

On the negative side:

I tried the microphone which works fine for Skype etc, but not for the use of voice control (name a musical number??). The only composer it recognizes seems to be Mozart. But if I want Verdi, all I get is some rock song. I dont know if this works better in English, since I have the Dutch language installed on my pod. Anyway, a small negative since I did not intend to use it much. But I think the problem might be in the pronunciation of words. It probably expects me to pronounce words like it is spoken in Dutch, which might be a problem if all you listen to are foreign composers and singers (but I had a blast listening to the music I have and didn't know I had on my pod).
The battery, that could be a more serious problem if you like to watch video's, say on vacation (of course at home i'll use my TV). Here is where my knowledge of technology fails, because I don't know if it's possible to have a longer lasting battery in a device this small. I'd have liked it though, if the battery lasted longer than it does now. Especially if you use the wireless, that seems to 'suck' energy more than anything.
I have a radio on my Ipod classic which requires no internet, just a radio accessory I bought. Why not on this pod? Maybe I can use streaming internet radio, but that would require internet access which I have a lot of the time, but not always.

On the whole: not sorry to have bought this, even at these prices. There are some (minor) negative points, but then what do you expect. And I could probably have written a lot more, but I think for everyday use, it's about the music, video's, internet and e-mail.

I am very happy with my purchase. The part that kind of ticks me off is i purchased around sept 22. and on sept 26ish they lower the price from 400-380. So in a sense i paid $20 extra just to get my item 4 days earlier. I also heard somewhere that amazon no longer price match so that is a big bummer.

Sound quality is great with the apple include earphones. Their decent but not the greatest. I can definitely tell the difference between inear and earphones. I would suggest everyone to invest in inear earbuds and save your apple earphones for if your inear earbuds break.

I mainly purchased the ipod touch for the application use. So far i am very happy. With apple always giving out free apps it can basically pay itself off if you get those promo free apps every week.

I have two issues: One with Amazon, the other with my 32gig iPod Touch.

I've had friends with 2nd-gen iPod Touches for a long time now, and I am very familiar with the wonderful screen and long list of features. The App Store sets it apart from any other handheld device. However, this iPod seems to be wildly unstable. It crashes several times a day (and I don't even use it that frequently). It simply freezes up completely at random. I've tried resetting system settings and even completely restoring its software.

Maybe I just got a lemon? I'm going to try and exchange it soon. Hopefully my next one works out. I'd really like to know if anyone else is having stability issues.

My problem with Amazon deals with their "Super Saver Shipping". When checking out, it says it will take 5-9 days. They should have an asterisk with a warning that it will take much longer than 5-9 days to arrive to your house. I didn't realize that processing would take an extra 5 business days until after I ordered. It was very frustrating, but I called up Amazon and they were kind enough to cancel my order with no questions asked. Had to fork over the extra cash to Best Buy to get my current iPod.

This was an interesting purchase. After basically owning (among my family and myself), darn near every version of iPod ever made (gen 1, 2, mini, video, Nano, gen 1 touch, classic), I found myself back in the market around mid-August when my 1 1/2 year old iPod classic bit the dust. You know the drill... everything is happy-go-lucky and then one day your iPod displays no backlight and a sad face icon, never to be played again. Well, after my iPod gave up the ghost, I thoroughly examined the full crop of competition. I will say that I was impressed with the Zune HD pre-release specs, especially the HD video out capability. At the time, Archos had not yet released much info on the new 5 tablet coming soon, so I didn't want to risk waiting on that. Creative also has a new player, the X-Fi2, but like the HD, it maxes out at 32GB. Knowing Apple had a big event planned for September 9th and media reports that the invite referenced music, I anticipated new iPods were on the way and eagerly waited to see how Apple would respond to the increasingly stiff competition. When September 9th arrived, I fired up every live blog, tweet, and report from the Apple event. I waited and waited and waited some more, but aside from the announcements about the price reductions (in response to the Zune) and the 64GB Touch, it was pretty anti-climactic. Honestly, this was my least eagerly purchased iPod in a while. So, the lack of any real groundbreaking news from Apple only made my choice more difficult. After mulling it over for a while, I eventually decided on the 64gb iPod Touch because I wanted the largest flash-based player I could find. (I'll admit the premature demise of my iPod Classic had a lot to do with my decision to insist on flash memory). In the end, simple capacity won out.

At first glance, it looks just like the gen 2 Touch. Form factor, user interface, everything looks just like the gen 2 iPod Touch. They pack double the memory into the same size player as the 32gb model. The headphones are basically the only thing different in appearance from gen 2 and contain the built-in mic for the new addition of voice control. The only downside to voice control is that it would have been much better if they offered a jack for you to use your own headphones. If you plan to use the feature, (or any other apps that use the mic), you're stuck with apple's buds until the 3rd party accessory makers catch up. I don't plan to use it because it seems more of a gadget than anything else.

The body is amazingly slim, especially for a 64gb player. same size as 32gb except they crammed double the flash storage into the tight quarters. With that much memory crammed into such a tight space, I'm interested in seeing if heat ever becomes a factor.

By now, everyone has seen the commercials, drooled over a friend's Touch, or visited a store to play with a Touch, so I'll spare you the more boring details about features like mail, notes, voice memos, calendar, etc, and cut to the nitty gritty:

Screen: Simply gorgeous as usual. Rich lush colors for viewing photos, videos, web browsing and anything else the Touch offers. Much larger and sharper than the Classic. Vivid, bright, and clearly one of the best offered. Can be viewed horizontally or vertically. The screen automatically rotates with you when you rotate the iPod.

Wi-Fi: Great performance. Setup is very simple and compatible with most Wi-Fi security protocols. Someone else said it best, the Safari browser is fast and responsive. It is NOT like surfing a web on a cell phone. Everyone promises 3G this, Edge that, super fast this, but cell phone browsing is like watching paint dry. Not so with the iPod as it uses your fast Wi-Fi connection, not pokey cellular service. The large screen also makes for a more practical browsing experience. The finger controls are just as outstanding as they've always been. The Touch also has maps and locator service, but it's rudimentary at best. It's not true satellite based GPS, or even cellular triangulation (I always wanted to say that) mapping. It establishes your position similar to cell tower triangulation; however, it uses available Wi-Fi hotspots instead of cell towers. If you live in a modern wired town, cool. On the downside, if you ever get lost in the wilderness with this thing... well... just be glad it holds a lot of music and apps.. you'll need it..

Bluetooth: Wonderful for cordless headphones. That's the best benefit. No clunky dongle to attach. Some folks are upset that they can't connect to a PC or cell phone with it.. Frankly, as long as it works with cordless headphones, speakers, and other iPods, I'm happy and don't consider it limited.

Capacity: Yes! Finally, after years of waiting, a 64GB iPod touch. Seriously, 32GB is not remotely close to a power-user's needs. I own over 500 Cd's from over 20 years of collecting, all ripped to MP3. This is in addition to store-purchased MP3's, movies, and pictures. I like to keep a few movies onboard as well as pics because you never know when they might come in handy. 64GB is still a little low, but at least I can fit the majority of my media on it. When they go 80GB or higher, they will have found the sweet spot. I realize flash memory isn't cheap, so I'm curious to see the price point as capacities increase even higher.

Sound quality: While Apple is far from the best sounding MP3 player, they are also far from the worse. Frankly, the first thing I normally do when I buy a new player is chuck the headphones. Microphone and remote aside, this is no exception. I'd rather have a pair of powered headphones delivering true rich fidelity than the uncomfortable sit-in-your-ear-cavity-ready-to-pop-out-at-the-slightest-bump buds traditionally supplied with iPods. Even then, Apple pretty much provides the same sound enhancements they've always provided. I keep things flat because the EQ continues to rely on distortion to tweak the sound. It's better to just listen to it without all the distorted "enhancements".

The touch screen seems every bit as responsive and quick as it's always been. As for the new and improved processor, I don't see a world of differences in speed between this and earlier gen touches. I'm sure performance is enhanced; I just don't see it on a truly noticeable level. It's still a lot quicker than navigating with the click-wheel on the hard-drive Classic.

As for the apps, I know this might irk some folks, but I have absolutely no intention of using apps. I simply don't buy my personal media players for that reason. I'm sure they're great time passers for flights and such, but honestly, it was my least sought option. Just a personal preference.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. I would still like increased capacity and more audio/video support from Apple (Where is support for WMV, WMA, Flac, Ogg??? Even the Zune will play AAC). Also, a radio is so long overdue it's ridiculous. But I guess the hope for these features will keep me glued to the blogs and tweets again when Apple has its next big iPod event next year. One thing's for sure, increasingly stiff competition from excellent contenders like the new Archos 5 (simply awesome), and the Zune HD will hopefully keep Apple on their A-game, which can never be a bad thing.

I received a new iPod Touch 32GB (3G - 3rd Generation) for my birthday, and absolutely love it. Having never owned an iPod or other portable music device, aside from my BlackBerry Bold that tries to double as one, you can imagine my pleasant surprise.

Basically... now I know why Apple owns this market. The device is absolutely brilliant. The UI is crisp and easy to understand. The controls.. well, it's touch-screen. How much easier can you get? There is no need for manual to get started, but a pamphlet is included. I'm sure I'm missing out on some of the advanced features, and will be reading the manual at some point! (e.g. Genius)

The Pros:

* Playing and navigating your music. I really like the cover flow feature, where I can flip through the albums I have on the device.

* Genius Mixes.. nice trick.

* Shake to Shuffle, which is another nice trick and I think it's cool.

* The wireless is a trmendous asset to the device. Surf the web as fast as wireless will carry the data.

* H264, HD video? Yes... and it looks gorgeous on this screen.

* Voice control of what's playing

* Blue-Tooth enabled, which I'm sure is technology carried from the iPhone.

I will add that there are a few cons, but I was OK with these drawbacks..

The Cons:

* The Mic is in the headset cord. That's right... it's not in the device itself. What does this mean? It means that you will need to make sure "new" headphones have a built-in mic. And if you're like me, the included Apple earbuds are pretty rough. You will need the mic to take advantage of voice commands (new feature for the iPod Touch) and Voice memos.

* No photo capture capability. You're saying, huh? That's right... it's included in the Nano but not the Touch. I suppose this is because it begins to encroach on the iPhone space? I'm sure there is a marketing reason for it.

* No video capture capability. Again, you're right... the Nano now has this feature, but not the iTouch.

There is a lot to say about my first go into the portable media device market, and I'm sure I have forgotten a lot of great things this device will perform.

Now, off to find some great headset/headphones!

I just returned this after having it for 12 days. I lost all of my songs on Itunes (only used on one computer) tried to sync again and then the IPod crashed - Lost all of my apps. Then my computer crashed (which is only 6 months old) and I lost all of my photos on the computer. So in all I lost 45 dollars in music and apps (Apple is to call me back) and I returned the Touch since it only had a 14 Day return policy.

In my opinion Apple should have a way to back up your files so if it crashes you can get them somewhere else on your own computer - it doesnt - you have to create a disk - good to know now.

Also after all these years why cant you have more than one Ipod on a computer - say set up by serial number so they can be separate accounts like two logins. HMMMM what an idea. Luckily I knew that much and didn't even experience that.

In anticipation of the eventual death of my Olympus M:Robe mp3 player, I purchased the Ipod Touch (3rd gen) yesterday. So far I have found things that I really like about this device and things that I dislike about this device.

What I like: beautiful design; lightweight; relatively easy to set up and use even if, like me, you have never owned an ipod before; energy efficient; nice graphics; passcode lock capability

What I don't like: I wish that I could multitask ie- have a Safari window open and jet over to another application with the flick of a finger and come back to Safari without having to relaunch Safari. Voice control is not all it's cracked up to be. You can't just say a command into the mic. You must push on the headphone remote or hold down the HOME button, wait for Voice Control to pop up and then say your command. The headphone remote is quite useful, but I see no need for Voice Control if you constantly need to push buttons anyway to activate it. While I have only used my Ipod Touch at home so far I have found it difficult to keep a steady wifi signal. I am running my iPod Touch beside my MacBook and my iPod Touch cannot pick up the signal. Finally, Apple offers you the choice of a number of great Backgrounds but you can't actually use them the way you think you should be able to. Sure you can select the "Wallpaper" you would like, but it will not appear on your Home Screen. Instead it will appear only on the "Unlock" page which you will encounter every time you need to unlock the device

I just recently moved from a Palm TX to the ipod touch 3rd gen, and wanted to list out a couple limitations that i ran into that people should be aware of. Note i really like my ipod touch and think this is the best overall small portable device available (especialy as palm stoped selling their pda's and is only selling phones now).

1 - Apple locks down syncing to only support certain file types, so to get other files types you have to have an application that is net enabled. Example being ebooks. You cann't choose files to send to the ipod, you have to get them through the app you are using (ebookreader, kindel, etc. . ).

2 - Video format support is fairly limited. Stuff that plays looks great, but you pretty much have to have it in quicktime format. And even then i havn't always been able to get my own videos to sync correctly.

3 - No office document support without extra cost. Palm TX came with Documents To Go. You can buy this for the ipod touch, but costs $10.

4 - Apple seems pretty draconian about limitations on using mp3s purchased through iTunes. I havn't worked out all the details, but it looks like you have to make sure to "deactivate" a computer before you move files to another computer where you have to activate the new computer. You also can't re-download content that you lost if you loose data or something. I looks like some people have been able to get apple to help them if they complain enough, but for now i think i am going to stick to buying mp3s through Amazon.

5 - Artificial limitations - not all hardware is activated (N wireless, FM transmitter), and no support for running multiple processes at once (except music). This is pretty crippling for some apps. For example, i can use Skype to make calls to anyone anywhere as long as i have WiFi access and Skype is open. If you could run skype in the background then this could function pretty much as a total phone replacement for me (i have vonage & no cell phone). However as is i am certainly not going to leave skype open all the time, so it only functions to allow me to call out (still awesome, but kills me to see the potential limited).

6 - Propiatary connectors. You have to use only your ipod usb cable. Would be great if you could use a standard usb cable so i don't have to keep switching cables into my laptop.

7 - No good category system for much of content. Notes, calendar, contacts, etc have no ability to assign a category (unless i am grossly missing something). That is definitly something i miss from my Palm that helped me find things quickly and keep things organized better.

8- No default ability to use synced data without ipod plugged in. So with palm you have the palm desktop software that you can edit contacts/calendar/notes, etc. . in without the palm and can sync it later. You can't even see the options for the ipod touch unless it is plugged in, and even then it is pretty limited what you can change.

I have had the Creative Zen vision M for more than 3 years and absolutely used that piece of gadget more than any other device myself being a music addict. With the free space nearing 0 on my creative (had a 30 gb version), the announcement of the 64Gb version of ipod touch couldn't have had come at a better time.
People keep telling about apple not including a camera. I am not bothered. If the amount of space is doubled and the speed is doubled keeping the price same then i cant find a reason not to be happy about.
The headphone included sure does have a microphone for voice control but i myself dont see myself using that piece of earbud. I am using the ipod with my Klipsch Image X10 and sure i am getting absolutely the best music. For people who complain about the quality of music output i would just say that get rid of the default earbud and get a good one ( I have already recommended one).

What i love about moving on to the ipod is the apps. They say there are 75000 apps. Nice chance that i would atleast find 75 that i would love(have already found more than 20).
Moving on to the games. Sure they arent as huge or i would say complex as the ones you would find in PSP but say what i love playing games without having to stress out my nerves. The graphics are good and the interface is the best point about it.

Genius is good but i see myself using the Pandora app more to discover new music.

The I-pod touch is not an MP3 player. it can play music but its primary use is the tons of apps available for download. I like music alot, and the sound quality of all I-pods is awful, and the touch take the rotten cake.

The UI looks simple but it takes so long to navigate to find the content you want and there seems to be no way around it.

The apps are its saving grace. if it wasn't for the apps there would be no reason not to pick up a Zune HD or a open format touch player like the walkmanX 1000.

I-tunes has no tools to discover new music, i am not a listener of main stream music, and so most of the featured artists are not at all to my tastes. so I cant find music to buy.

i switched from my Zune, and i am not happy. i probably will use the Zune software music discovery tools or return the touch.

I was tempted with the apps and games, and although i had fun with them, they don't help my commute and they dont have the power music has on me.

I am a music lover and that's why i owned a Zune before, the touch seemed like such a good device. but it seems like it is rated so high because no one has taken a good look at how Zune is now.

This is my first iPod and MP3 player. So far I've had the iPOD TOUCH (32-GIG/3RD GEN) for two-weeks and I'm loving it.

It's does so much more than just play music, which is why I wanted one. I'm not a Mac person at all but the iPod Touch...I love it.

Out of the box it found my Wi-Fi connection and had me surfing the net (the real Internet and not the cell phone web pages like the one on my Verizon phone). It was intuitive to use and I'm finally getting accustomed to using the touch screen to scroll and type away.

This review is mostly for other iPod newbies like myself. Here's what it comes with:

***The iPod Touch- slick and smooth and very thin

***A USB Cable- this hooks your iPod to your computer to recharge the battery and to sync it with iTunes.

***Plastic Docking Thing- this is a small plastic part that allows you to dock the iPod to an external device (I'm not sure what).

***Head Phones with Microphone and external volume control.

***Teeny-tiny insert- with bare-bones info. You have to access the full manual, which is available for free download in PDF format, at the apple website.

My advice is to buy an external cover for the iPod--the 2nd Generation iPod Touch skins/cover fit the new 3rd Generation ones because the body is the same--and buy a screen protector so you keep the screen free from scratches and such. I already scratched the shiny back of my iPod just by placing in down on the table so be careful when you first get it if you don't have a cover for it.

As long as you have Wi-Fi (wireless Internet connection) in your house/apt you can get full use out of the iPod Touch. You can also access free Wi-Fi hotspots in stores, restaurants, and other areas, so you can get on the Internet and download applications (apps) etc., check your email, go on facebook, youtube, even Amazon has an app, that can be downloaded onto the iPod.

The iPod Touch is configured to automatically search for Wi-Fi networks, it looks for both either locked (need a password) or unlocked (no password) networks, and displays them in the settings for "Wi-Fi." You really don't have to know anything about Wi-Fi to get it started. You just pick one of them and it connects to it.

I've tried my iPod at some hotspots like a shopping center with a Starbucks and it found the Wi-Fi and connected but since a lot of people were using it, it took a while to connect.

You need the program iTunes, which is a free down-loadable program for Windows or Mac, and an iTunes account to purchase and download the apps (most are free but you still need an account to download them). If you've used iTunes before for buying song downloads or just to register then you already have a login account...if you haven't used iTunes before it's free to download and easy to install. Then you sign up for an account which is also free, unless you plan on purchasing songs or videos.

I really like that the BBC Reader will download their stories into the cache memory, once you connect via Wi-Fi so you can read the articles offline (when Wi-Fi is not available). NYT and AP will allow you to save articles that you can read offline as well. And the AP will deliver breaking news as long as you're connected... ALL FREE!!!

I've downloaded a dictionary, spell checker, facebook, Grimm's Fairytales and Alice In Wonderland books to read...all for FREE! I also got this free app called "Pandora" which is a radio station that will only play songs by artists that you want to hear. Too cool!

I know that I sound like a broken record with the "free" stuff but being a Verizon Wireless user, I'm sure other VZW customers feel me, I'm amazed that one can download and install quality, portable applications onto a device for no charge or subscription plan.

Calendar for appointments etc., contact phone book, clock, weather, calculator (you can download a free tip-calculator), notes and maps. These all come with the iPod Touch.

iTunes will keep the stuff (music, apps, videos) on your iPod, backed-up on your computer so you'll always have a copy of those things. And you can tell it which play-lists to sync so that you don't have to carry around your entire music/video library from your computer on the portable.

Anyway, I'm loving my iPod Touch and it was the perfect birthday gift to myself. It really is like having a mini-computer with you at all times. The only thing that's missing is a camera, but that's not a big deal at all. It's great for people who want an iPhone, but don't want AT&T's lousy service. I also love not having to pay a monthly subscription charge to Verizon for apps on my cell phone, now that I have the iPod Touch!

The only thing I would advise getting--in addition to the iPod--is the cover protector skin and screen protector mentioned earlier, and the Apple USB Power Adapter which will allow you to plug the USB cord into an electrical outlet (though it isn't necessary, it charges a lot faster than when it's charging from your computer).

Since this is my first iPod, I don't know how it stacks up against the previous versions. But this one is great and really addicting! So if you've been wondering if you should get one and you don't have an iPhone, have access to Wi-Fi, then I'd say...yes! The iPod Touch has so much to offer the user that you can find something to do with it even if you don't plan on using it as an MP3 player all that much.

Even if you don't buy MP3s--I've only purchased about three from iTunes; the rest was from Amazon through credits from special purchases and iPod can play them--iTunes is really handy because it makes taking songs from CDs so easy by capturing them and turning them into MP3s. The 3rd gen ipod touch 32gb was a nice upgrade for me after owning the 1st gen ipod touch 16gb. Overall the touch is a lot faster. I noticed a huge difference when using graphic intensive apps like google earth or games like need for speed. I was disapppointed there were no real changes to the 3rd gen ipod touch from the 2nd gen. I was atleast hoping for an increase in battery life. It looks like from all the numbers online and from apples webstie the 3rd gen ipod touch has lost about 6 hours in audio playing time. The 2nd gen had a 36 hour music playtime and the 3rd gen has a 30 hour music play time. Im guessing this maybe due to the fast processor and gaming chip with maybe draining the battery faster. The 3rd gen touch comes with the voice control feature which is found on the other new ipods like the nano, shuffle and iphone 3gs. This feature cannot be added with the current 3.1 update to a 2nd gen ipod touch, it is built into the hardware. The voice feature is nice to have but isnt exactly that intutive. Unlike other voice features in other devices like cell phones where the phone will adapt and learn according to your voice, the ipod touch has no learning feature. It either understands what your saying or it doesnt (in which case you have to repeat yoursel unitl it does). The 3rd gen also comes with the iphones mic/remote headset which is a nice added feature. Easy to change the volume or track and use the mic for apps like skype or shazam. Probably the main feature I really like about the 3rd gen is the speaker which I didnt have on my first gen. Mind you its not really that loud but great for casual listening like podcasts, gaming and itunes store preveiws for songs. I really like the fact that I can now use my ipod touch for making phone calls via voip. Theres a quite a few apps available for this like: fring, skype, icall, etc. The quality is pretty good considering its voip. The touch also has other great features like the nike transmiiter, bluetooth, copy and paste (finally). The one thing I wish the touch had and also the iphone is the multitasking ability. Maybe some day apple will finally allow this. I find it so ancient coming from my blackberry bold which can run many apps at one time. It becomes annoying some times when you just want check the weather or email and your running another app. The only app that can run in the background is music. But only music from the ipod itself not any app playing music like last.fm or flycast. Overall I love the touch especially since I tried the ipod classic and didnt like the click wheel at all. I have also purchsed the griffin navigate remote which allows me to change tracks, volume, playlists and listen to fm radio and have screen to see what song is playing. The 3rd gen ipod touch is a nice upgrade for me coming from my old 1st gen ipod touch. IF you have a 2nd gen ipod touch I dont really see a need to get the 3rd gen. Unless you have run out of memory and need a 64gb or will be doing a lot of gaming on it. At this point there arent any games that can use the new touchs gaming speed yet. Other features of the 3rd gen can be upgraded on its own, like the mic/remote headset and the 3.1 update. I am a long time iPod addict, whose has spent over a thousand dollars at the iTunes store, on music, videos and movies. Memory hogs, all of them; but I still like to take most of them with me everwhere I go. Which is why I have not upgraded my iPod Classic 160GB (yes Virginia, there used to be a 160GB Classic) model.

I bought a 64GB Touch direct from apple on the day it came out -- I find it often takes longer to get newly released stuff from Amazon. I replaced my 32GB 2nd generation -- and to tell the truth, the extra 32GB is the main difference I notice. Now I can fit all of my music and video/tv shows and apps besides with room to spare, I love it!

A little about me, I'm a diehard mp3 player fan so I have owned a broad variety of iPods and iPod alternatives: Archos 604/605/5, iRiver Clix2, Sony Walkman X, iPod Classic/Nano/Touch 1,2,3,4,5, Creative Zen/X-Fi, Cowan U2, Samsung P2 etc. I will be comparing the iPod Touch 3rd Generation to all of these other players.

Let me just say that I'm not rating the quality of the update, but rather the unit as a whole. Admittedly, this is a pretty weak update especially if you were hoping for GPS or a camera. I am a little envious that the Nano gets a camera and the Touch doesn't, what's that all about? But ultimately, this is not a video camera for me (I have a Flip for that!) so I really don't care. I am rating the whole package as an MP3 and video player. I am considering how the Touch compares to competing products.

One other comment -- as to sound quality, I can't say that is either pro or con. If you want really good sound go get yourself a Sony Walkman! However, I find the sound (through my UE11 Pros) to be respectable, especially if you tweak the sound settings to your tastes. Neither remarkably good nor remarkably bad so I don't list SQ on either pro or con list.

Lets get to it then, what I loved about my Touch:

1) Beauty -- just raw esthetic pleasure, the Touch is without doubt the sexiest looking MP3 player I have ever owned! And it feels darn good in my hand too.
2) Software/iTunes -- what's the point of even mentioning an iPod without discussing iTunes? iTunes is for sure the best media player/store interface that I have ever seen. Definitely gives every iPod a leg up over the competition -- although Media Monkey is pretty good in many ways and that's what I use for my other players.
3) Apps -- nobody can compare with apple's App Store and the amazing assortment of Apps now available for the Touch.
4) Firmware/updates -- the apple firmware is probably the best out there. Sony Walkman is pretty good too, but I think apple gets top honors. The update process through iTunes is the smoothest software update process of any MP3 player I've ever seen -- although Archos comes close.
5) Play screen -- the Touch play screen really sets the standard that everybody else is aspiring to. I love how they fill the entire screen with the album art. The only other one that even comes close is the Walkman.
6) Accessories -- in the apple happy place there are accessories galore and readily available at your local store. Most of my other players require online shopping to find cases and whatnot.
7) Dedicated volume, home button, power button -- much as I love touch screens, its really nice to have a few dedicated buttons that you can hit without being able to see the screen.
8) Browser -- The Safari is one of the better browsers for an MP3 player, especially the pinch multi-touch interface for zooming is really nice. Keyboard is a little hard to use but can be done with practice.
9) Apple support -- these guys are fantastic about fixing/replacing faulty units. I should know because I've had to send a few items back over the years.
10. Speed -- they say its faster and I do notice the difference when playing with my apps which seem a bit snappier now. At this rate, the Touch is going to replace my laptop...

10 solid marks gives the iPod Touch 5 stars for being top of its class in so many categories! However, being an engineer, I always see room for improvement (I sure hope apple is listening!)

Things I don't like so much:

1) Play button? No dedicated play button means this is almost impossible to pause/play by touch. My first Sony Walkman had the best play button ever, the Archos 605 had a nice dedicated play button even though it was a touch screen. I just don't think touch screen should have to mean everything has to be done with the touch screen!
2) Battery -- its not pretty if the battery goes bad on this thing. Unfortunately, removable or even accessible batteries are becoming a thing of the past with MP3 players! Luckily they keep putting out new ones every year so I never use the battery up :)
3) Dock -- seems to me that the apple dock options are pretty weak compared to the Archos DVR dock.
4) Video cable -- if you want to watch those tv shows/movies you buy on iTunes on your TV you're going to have to buy a special video cable -- mine cost like $50!! Just keep that in mind...
5) Stylus won't work -- since this is a capacitance touch screen you can't use a stylus as much as you (or I) might like to. Looks shinier, but hard to use -- I like Archos better here.
6) Onscreen keyboard -- not great, Archos is definitely better for me partly because you can use a stylus if you have to.

Well there you have it -- 9 big pluses, 6 small minuses makes for about 4.7 stars by my calculations! If you don't need huge storage space or HD video resolution this is a great MP3/video player, not necessarily the best in every category but I would say it is the best overall unit available today.

My recommendations depending on your personal preferences:
- iPod touch if you just want an all around great music player, browser, video player, game playing, or if you are an App head (I'm rapidly becoming one myself!). It does everything!
- Sony Walkman if you want really good sound (the best I think) and/or you like Rhapsody
- Archos 5 if you want a big HD screen, great DVR capabilities, stylus friendly touch screen, and/or a big hard drive (500GB coming soon!)

A few days ago I bought the Ipod Touch 8 Gb. It is true that this model it's actually a repackaged 2G, but the fact that there are not tangible upgrades (which has been a bit disappointing)does not make it a bad device. First of all, let's get the whining out of the way. No, there's no camera on this iPod touch. But honestly, do you really need that cruddy 640x480 video camera they put in the iPod nano for your iPod touch? Do you really not have a camera on your cell phone?!?!

I didn't need a camera. I have a nice camera on my mobile phone and I barely ever use it (I suspect because I'm not a MySpace user). However, I was happy to see the improvements they DID make to the new 3rd Generation iPod touch.

* Faster CPU. This means that games, web surfing, and apps run 50% faster, and it's noticeable when you go from the older model to the newer one.

* OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics. Soon there will be games that offer advanced effects, and this iPod touch will be ready for it. At the time of this writing there are only three games with Open GL ES 2.0 support, but eventually you will be required to have it to use some apps. I'd rather have it than not have it. Besides, water, shadows, and other things look great with it.

* New earbuds with mic/remote control. Now you can control the iPod touch without looking at the screen, and use apps like Skype and Shazam without adapters. Very handy.

* Voice commands. You can use the mic to control your music. Press and hold the button on the mic to enter Voice Command mode, then say "Play artist _______" and it will play that artist. You can also ask "What band plays this?" or say "Play album _______" and it will comply. The voice recognition is very impressive, and the voice that speaks back to you is understandable, even if it mispronounces some things.

* Louder speaker. The built-in speaker sounds better to me. Louder, and much more clear when playing music or game sound.

There are also a few things that are in this model of iPod touch that are not in earlier models, but has yet to be "activated" by software. These include an FM receiver, FM transmitter, and 802.11n transmitter. Apple will no doubt sell us a future software update that will include a radio tuner, 802.11n support, and possibly even the ability to broadcast with the built-in FM transmitter from your iPod touch to your car stereo without a third-party accessory.

So yeah, this is an improvement over the 2nd Generation model. I'll trade all those features for a camera any day!

And of course, everything that was in the 2nd Gen iPod touch is here as well. Bluetooth support with the 3.0 software (nothing like wireless headphones for your music!), physical volume control on the left side of the iPod touch, nice screen, lots of storage space, and amazing support when it comes to accessories; This has the same form factor as the 2nd Gen model, so you should have no trouble finding a case or docking device to work with it.

Although the iPod Touch has a lot of good features-I am able to download the GCN Radio Network/Alex Jones Broadcasts right from the iTunes Music Store, an application on the device over a WIFI network, I can't recommend the iPod because the build quality is not very good.
I am having my device repaired on Thursday, September 17th because the headphone jack will only give me sound in one ear, regardless of which headphones I utilize with the device. And, since Sophomore year of high-school until now, I have had an iPod Shuffle, Video, and Touch that was replaced once or more.

This review could be summerd up in a short sentence: You are looking at the current killer appliance for personal entertainment. But I never, ever, do short reviews... So here's the long story. Grab a cup of coffee, as this review answers questions you never knew existed.

I have to admit that there have been few items that have captured and kept my enthusiasm for as long as the iPod Touch. Two years ago, I purchased the original Touch, last year I upgraded to the 32 GB, and now I have the 64GB version. Was the upgrade worth it? And what are the things yet to be imroved? Because even though the Touch is close to perfection, there are still many small things that can be improved.

Hardware
Physically, the new (64GB) Touch is identical to it's 2nd generation brethren. It's polished crome backplate is slightly curved, making it fit your palm perfectly. As before, the fact that it's made from polished chrome will guarantee that it attracts fingerprints and scratches almost magically. I'm no friend of any kind of protective covers, and my last (32GB) Touch had to live in my pocket with my keys, coins, and other stuff I threw in with it. After a year, the backplate did pick up a lot of scratches, and I expect that the 64GB to fare no better. Personally, I would have preferred a brushed finish for the backplate. This may have caused problems with the readability of the customized engraving that Apple applies to the Touch on the backplate for no additional charge (a nice 'touch' that becomes increasingly important as the Touch becomes more ubiquitious). This custom engraving you can only get if you order the Touch through Apple (it's also not available in the Apple Stores).

The front plate is made from one of the most impressive glass enhancements I've ever seen. After a year of heavy abuse, my old Touch's glass front has not a single scratch - not one. I don't know how Apple does it, but this is really impressive. Remember, I don't use any protective covers or films. The screen itself is brilliant, bright, and can easily be read outside, wich is a feat in itself. The Touch has an ambient light sensor, so it can dim the screen when the surroundings are darker.
This time around, the screen's color temperature has remained unchanged (the 2G shifted all colors from a blueish to a more golden tinge). Movie playback is simply astonishing. The image is crisp, and the on-screen controls natural. Again, there are niceties such as double-tapping the screen to change aspect ratio, or placing bookmarks etc. You still can't set a movie's contrast, but beyond that small issue, movie playback is perfect. Viewing movies on the Touch simply works great, but personally I think that the screen is too small to watch a full movie. Last week, I tried watching a TV episode while on a plane enroute to Hamburg (a 75 minute flight), but quickly decided against it, opting instead to play a game of 'Luxor'. Somehow I prefer a larger screen for consuming video, while I have no problems doing something interactive on it. Still, video plays great on the Touch.

Button and interface lay-out has remained the same from the last generation: volume controls on the left side, top holds the 'exit/on' button, buttom has dock and phones connectors, and the front holds the single home button. There is one thing that can be improved here: I would have preferred the audio connector to be on top (or either side), as the current configuration precludes the use of many applications (e.g. News- and eBook readers) when you want to place it upright -- for example in the Gym. Some apps do use the accelerometers and can be used positioning the Touch upside down, though.

The built-in speaker is unchanged from the last version. It's weak, tinny, mono, produces horrible sound, has no volume to speak of -- and yet it's one of the best additions to the Touch (the original didn't have it, the 2nd gen did). It simply makes casual gaming so much more fun. I don't care about the bad sound quality, I just love the fact that it's there.

The signatory white earphones that Apple sells with the Touch may look good, but I don't like them. In my ears they are too uncomfortable. Since I'm no audiophile, I can't comment on their audio quality other than that it's good enough for me. Anyway, I replaced them with my favorite non-Apple version. The hitch here is that Apple now delivers the 64 GB (and 32 GB) with earphones that sport a built-in mic and remote. And my head phones don't have that. While the remote is nothing much to write home about (the way it works is just too complex), the mic works well, and has just the right fidelity to pick out voice over the background noise. So, for now, I keep the white buds with me in case I want to use the IP-telephony capabilities.

Battery life appears to have been reduced somewhat from the 2nd gen - at least on paper. During the past few days the new 3rd gen Touch certainly performed as well as or even better than my 2nd gen - but then again, that one's battery is already one year old. One fact that I've become very fond of is the quick-charge ability, which works really well.

The built-in wireless connectivity is really nice, with astonishingly well executed integration. The touch does all it's wireless networking over WiFi and Bluetooth. WiFi works really well (especially here in Switzerland where Hotspots are particularely dense), and Bluetooth integration (which I tried on the 3rd gen for the first time) is flawless. WiFi reception (range) lags somewhat behind that of a Wintel laptop (no doubt due to the metal backplate) and is pretty much on par with that of a 15" Macbook Pro (which is also somewhat lacking in WiFi reception range). WiFi is still the 'g' variant though [interestingly enough, the built-in hardware does support 11n, but so far Apple has chosen not to activate it, presumably to conserve battery. This is interesting also from the fact that in the 2G Touch, Apple initially included Bluetooth capabilities, but only activated it with a later OS release. Perhaps the same can be expected for 11n]. Bluetooth now also works with headphones and BT-based car integration kits (works well in mine). I would have loved to try out BT-based printing from the Calender or Addressbook app, but hit a snag: it appears no Touch app supports printing...

Missing Hardware
There is some hardware that I expected, or whished that it was included in the Touch - especially as (some) of them are now present on other iPods:
No camera. I was somewhat ambivalent about this. No camera means no pictures and/or movies. But it also means that I can keep handling it rough, as I do not have to worry abou the lens. Also, I don't have to worry about taking it to the Gym (my Gym has very strict rules towards camera-equipped items). All things being equal, the addition of a camera (still and/or video) would have been nice, but I don't miss it much (truth be told, I yet have to use the camera on my mobile phone).
Unfortunately, there is also no built-in mic. This is much a more significant omission than having no camera. The Touch is a first class audio voice recorder and (more importantly for me) a first class Skype client. There are third party solutions for this (a mini-micro that directly plugs into the headphone connector), but if the touch had a built-in mike, it would make using world-class applications like Shazam (and Skype) so much easier
Likewise, there is no compass, nor a GPS receiver present in the touch. I understand that these are left out to better differentiate the Touch from the iPhone, but I would have welcomed them in the top-of-the-line (64GB) version of the iPod.
And, finally, there is no radio receiver. I'm definitely not a radio man, as I next to never listen to it. Still, some people do (as the ton of nicely selling IP radio applications shows), and anyway, the Nano has it now - even with a nice Tivoesque pause feature! Why not the Touch? Strange design choice.

iPod & iTunes
The original iPod's strength was the sheer brilliant ease of use - and the touch-based interface represented a mile-stone in improving on that. To date there simply is no better multimedia interface than that of the Touch/iPhone. It's natural after just a few seconds. It's drop-dead beautiful, with muted highlights, and cleverly accentuated by small (if flashy) animations that convey the different metaphors of the interface (e.g. the rubber-banded bouncing when you reach the end of a playlist). Like no interface before you can instantly use it to accomplish even complex tasks with just the flick of a finger. Using it is sheer, unadulterated fun. The 'Coverflow' album browsing may be one of the least useful, but it's definitely the most natural (and fun) way to flip though you music. And it is jaw-droppingly well executed (note: when you use coverflow you should make sure that you have installed the all cover art from any music you did not purchase from the iTunes Store).
At the base of all iPod music playing is the Playlist, and using playlist on the Touch is a joy. The interface whileplaying is also mature, offering niceties such as displaying a song's lyrics on a single tap, along with singularily simple controls for repeat and shuffle play. Unfortunately, this playlist feature also still has one of the most glaring shortcomings: the Touch is unable to play playlist groups. I usually group a small bunch of songs into very short playlist (e.g. '10 best Springsteen'), and then mix these playlist into larger ones by simply dropping a playlist into a group. Although iTunes supports this, all versions of the Touch have stubbornly refused to do that.
Also somewhat strangely missing on the Touch is the ability to search for an Artist or music title. Considering the fact that more than 10'000 songs fit onto the device the need for an ability to search for something would seem obvious (note: the Touch *does* have a global search function, which will also turn up songs - along with contacts and mails that match your search phrase. Having to leave the iPod app simply to look for a song is against everything Apple's ease of use is about, and it's not what I would expect). And while we are at it, I'd love the ability to also search the lyrics, but that would be the icing on the cake.
What is present, and what continues to amaze me is a function that I initially dismissed as some way to sell song: Genius Playlists. What it does is that given a song it finds other songs you already possess that would play nicely together. Since I have lots of songs (else I wouldn't be purchasing the 64GB), this feature has helped me to get an incredible amount of additional joy out of my music. There are lots of gems hidden that mass of music I never knew I owned. Of course, if you want to, Genius will also recommend songs you don't have but can buy right now on iTunes. That, of course, is the 'sell song' angle. But at least it's incredibly well executed (and yes, I've used it)
The 64GB now also supports voice recognition - and I'm sure it's a marvel of technology. But (much like the auto-correction system for text) it mostly only works in English. If you have set your system to German, you must pronounce english band names as they would be read aloud by a german-only speaker. Do it once, and everyone in the room stares at you. You'll never do it again. Plus, due to the greater complexity of the german language (I am german speaking), the commands only work half the time. A nice idea, and a boon while driving or typing. But *only* when set to english.

Rounding out the audiovisual feature set is the Touch's photo presentation ability, really showcasing the touch-based gesture interface. It was the pinch and flick gesture that originally sold me on the Touch, and it still does today. On the Mac, iTunes ties into iPhoto's image management, greatly facilitating the task of sorting out which images to synch to your iPod (on windows, this task is slightly more pedestrian, as you'll have to manually manage the 'My Pictures' folder). A strange quirk, though, is that during synch iTunes seems to downsample your images to a (to me unknown, but definitely) smaller size. Since I'm a photo nut (shooting with DSLR) this 'feature' annoys me somewhat, as iTunes currently does not provide any means to control the downsampling of photos.

The success of the original iPod has left some competitors scratching their heads, while it is blindingly obvious to most users: the tight, seamless integration with iTunes. Now in version 9, iTunes has become somewhat complex and not always that intuitive to use. It now also tries to manage Photos and Movies as well as Music and Applications. But iTunes is still very easy to use, and synchronizing the iPod Touch with iTunes is quick and simple. A small disappointment is the fact that you still can't synchronize your Touch wirelessly, and that it still refuses to mount as an external disk. Another disappointment is that although iTunes now allows you to share your music over the net with multiple Macs, it can't stream your Music to the Touch (A small, brilliant app from the AppStore can do this for you, though).

And while we are speaking of iTunes - there is one feature that I'd love to have on the Touch: the visualizer. iTunes' visualizer is really beautiful, and I would have loved the same functionality on my Touch.

Internet
While by itself the iPod Touch is an impressive and fun device, it comes into real swing when connected to the internet. The always-on nature and graceful handling of connection drops make the Touch one of the best internet devices I've used to day. The included Safari internet browser performs great - unless you try to load Flash-based content, which is not supported. The email client works great for receiving and viewing mail. Writing anything but the shortest of email is annoying, as the Touch is simply too small for comfortably entering any significant amount of text. Calendar and Address Book are well executed (even if entering a new date and merging multiple calenders is slightly more convoluted than necessary). Mail, Calendar and Addressbook can (if you have that service available) synch live to either mobile me (which Apple loves to sell you) or Exchange (which your employer loves to force on you) through a feature that is very similar to 'push' notification. In the past, using Exchange has been somewhat spotty, and mobile Me has had it's own share of problems. All in all, though both work nice, and exceedingly quick. You do need to be in range of a hotspot for this to function, though. Somewhat disappointing is the fact that notes are not synched. Another nice addition is 'Voice Memos' which is an audio recorder. Had the Touch an internal mic, this app would have been even better...

Applications
Next to the 'productivity' or 'PDA' suite (Mail, Calendar, Contacts) the touch comes with some other nice (but somewhat dull) apps (e.g. Maps, Stocks, YouTube) and two killer Apps: iTunes and App Store. While the former gives you instant access to all songs and movies that are currently available on iTunes (Warning: that, plus the incredible 'Shazam' can lead to unintented gross music spending), the latter (App Store) gives you equal instant access to an incredible number of applications that you can instantly download and use. The quality of applications on the App Store is quite uneven, and tends to cluster around some rather puerile topics (as a veritable, uh, heap, of Fart applications proves). That being said, there are a number of jaw-droppingly good applications that are able to utilize the touch interface (and other capabilities such as accelerometer) in new and surprising ways. Just to name a few are the aforementioned 'Shazam' that can identify a song being played and instantly link to iTunes (you have to see it in action to believe it), Flight Control, where you manage an airport by drawing the flight path for each plane, Bloomberg that provides stock information in an exhaustive way, and Wemlin that shows an up-to-date timetable for when the next tram arrives at my station. No matter what, there probably is an application that supports you with it.
And then there are games. Apple had quickly recognized that the Touch represents an immensely attractive and powerful game platform. Performance, screen, connectivity and control capabilities make it the ideal casual gaming platform. Accordingly, games represent by far the largest category in the App store. While inevitably there are some truly awfully executed, or simply dull games, the majority of the available games are at least somewhat entertaining, while some rival and exceed those that can be had for thrice the price on dedicated gaming platforms.

In the past, my Touch quickly filled up with app after app that I simply couldn't live without any more, and an unforseen limitation of the Touch's design surfaced: app management. Applications are arranged as icons on a 4x4 grid per page, with multiple pages that you can flick left and right to navigate. Unfortunately, re-arranging apps, although possible (and quite ingeniously implemented) is still a chore. Apple has done the right thing, and integrated a much nicer app manager into the (PC/Mac) iTunes application.

Speed Improvement
The iPod Touch, although seen by some as the 'iPhone's smaller sibling' was always either as nible as the phone, or even faster. The new, 3rd gen Touch is said to be 'up to 50% faster' than the previous generation. To be honest, I'm not sure that I see that speed improvent translate to much performance increase. That may be due to the fact that my Touch seldom maxes out on processor throughput or (for example when browsing) that WiFi bandwidth is the limiting factor. Some apps appear to be 'snappier' during start-up (smaller apps) or execution (games, mostly), but all in all, the Touch pretty much seems to be as fast as the last generation. This leads me to believe that the real bottleneck is it's internal execution memory (i.e. not the 64 GB storage, but processor memory), and ony applications that are specifically written to take advantage of new technology (e.g. OpenGL ES). Or in other words: the overall speed has not been improved that much.

SDK
So you want to be a geek? Already are? You can write your own applications for the Touch if you like. I've taken the plunge and downloaded the SDK. Note that you can download the SDK and develop for the Touch/iPhone without actually owning one. The development system comes with a iPhone simulator that you can use to test your applications without downloading them unto an actual device (it does have some limitations: for example, the accelerometers are not simulated, and you have no indication of the true execution speed). Well, you do need a Mac for this (although it can be a few years old). The SDK is impressive - overwhelming even if you are not used to Mac programming (and almost prohibitively complex if you are not used to frameworks like Cocoa and object-oriented programming). Still, crunching out your first (very basic) appliction is surprisingly easy, and if you roll that way, you'll get addicted quickly.

Summary:
It's the killer personal entertainment device. Buy it. You know you want it -- especially if you have read this far. If you have the 2nd gen iPod, you may need to ask yourself if the slight speed bump and the additional storage is worth the hefty price tag. To me it was, but your mileage may vary.

I just bought the 32GB 3rd generation iPod Touch and it's truly an amazing gadget! I was upgrading myself from a shuffle and was holding out until the 3rd generation of Touches was released. Before i start let me just tell you "what's New" with the iPod touch Third generation" :

-Faster Cpu/Double the ram/Better graphic (faster Boot time/faster loading is all what i did notice)
-Double the storage for the same old price
-Voice control (I'll explain it in a second)
-Latest firmware for free
-New Earbuds with built in remote+Microphone (So you can use voice control)

And that is everything~ depends on your needs upgrading from 2G to 3G might be not worth it.

About the new Voice control function, if you love to take your iPod with you to the Gym the new feature "Voice control" is pretty cool, it does allow you to control your music via your voice, no need to get the iPod out of your pocket you can simply say "Next" to move to next song, say "shuffle" for shuffle , say "Pause" and music playback will stop etc, that is why i recommend the iPod touch over iPod classic for gym users, my friend bought an iPod classic and now he complains that the iPod classic is too heavy for him when he goes to the gym and he will have to buy another iPod "properly Nano" for his Gym, for me i use my iPod touch for the gym, it's so light that sometimes i forgot that it's even in my pocket.

After playing with my iPod touch 3g for a while i honestly did not notice any difference from the outside or the inside compared to my old iPod touch Second generation (It's supposed to be faster but i did not notice anything during music and video playback or the menus, however browsing with safari and loading facebook was faster, same thing with boot time), you properly can only notice it being faster with heavy applications since video/music playback is already fast enough with 2G.

I got the 64GB iPod 3G for [...]$, if you think of upgrading your 2G iPod touch honestly do yourself a favor and save yourself the money unless you really need that much of a storage (I do that is why i bought one), also remember that the 3G battery lasts less than 2G,(3G battery = 30 Hours of music playback versus 2G 36 hours of music playback according to apple official specs)

*VERY IMPORTANT* for the people who wants the new 8GB version, the new third generation 8GB iPod touch is NOT 3G it's a second generation iPod touch but apple did repack it/renamed it to 3rd generation, which seems to be misleading by APPLE and it's not cool at all, it is IPod Touch 2G+Updated firmware and that is it.

The iPod touch 3rd generation 32GB/64GB versions comes with a free mic+remote with the earbuds while the 8GB do not (it comes with normal earbuds), the 32GB/64GB have the New CPU+Graphic (According to apple the new cpu is twice as fast just like the iPhone 3GS) while the new 8GB use the same old CPU/Chip from the old iPod touch second generation.

The iPod touch got the best browser i have ever seen in a portable device, i do not even need to carry my netbook with me anymore thanks to my iPod touch, if you hated browsing with lame browsers that crash a lot or slow (many mobile phones) trust me on this one, the iPod touch browser is not a toy or a gimmick it is a browser you can depends on, it's super fast and smooth and after using it for like a full year it has only crashed on me once!

This is my first ever Ipod and also in my opinion, the best ever handheld device, at least for now. The pull factors are so strong that I decided to get this device right away when I know quite a lot are disappointed that there's no FM and camera. I won't want to wait for 6 months or more to see Zune HD get proven that its software/apps community can match up or Zii Egg to get their OS properly done, Android optimized, developers join in the community.

Why I like this device:
1) Awesome OS/software (at least a generation ahead of its peers), browser, apps (so many that they are going to dominate like Windows for many years to come), many free apps, ebooks, huge developer community (you can find whatever apps you need), email, calendar, gaming platform (OpenGL ES Version 2.0) and even education software.
2) Fast fluid flow and response (so far no bugs), due to updated CPU and 3 yr proven and optimized OS.
3) Extremely well designed and engineered for ease of use and comfort. Slim and light weight, keyboard, voice command, multi-touch screen very well done.
4) 64GB, the largest flash memory handheld device. I can put all my high resolution photos and videos inside and yet use it for my daily tasks like surfing, email, calendar, contacts, keep track of live stock prices and charting.
5) Price cuts made it attractive and tempting (they gave me a free engrave).
6) Unlimited flexibility. There's so many tasks to do with it that you probably don't need a netbook.
7) Lossless and gapless music support.

Why I am still a tad disappointed with this device:
1) Still prefer to have FM.
2) No still and video camera. But I feel that even if they include a camera, it will make the device thicker and bulkier and also more expensive. Even so, it is probably a VGA standard for video recording (not 720p) as the limitation is not their software (software is awesome I must say) but the CPU. Their CPU is still very inferior to others like Zii and Tegra. And perhaps they don't want it to be too close to the Iphone and they want to market this as a super versatile platform with focus on gaming.
3) Sound quality not top-notch, just acceptable. I tried using it with my Aurvana X-fi and the quality improves but you just don't feel it is as good as Cowon S9 or sony x1000.
4) I prefer to use my old EP-630 in-ear phones for music/video.
5) Battery life is good but not superior to other comparable devices.

Why I think it may not be the most awesome in the very near future (6-12mths):
1) Zune HD which is so far unproven in software (OS, apps, browsing) have superior hardware such as better screen, 720p out, better audio quality.
2) Zii Egg which is so far the most awesome in turns of hardware but the software will take time to develop.
3) Ipod touch 4th generation...FM, GPS, audio enhancement, better audio chip/processing for music/video/games, dual VGA and HD video cam and simultaneously 1080p HDMI out...Zune and Zii better hurry up to close in the gap or never...

I've been dying for an iPhone since they arrived, but at AT&T's outrageous rates I cannot afford three (there's no way I could get myself one, and NOT my wife and teenage daughter!) So I've been shopping for an "iPhone without the phone", which is essentially what the Touch is.

I have been following the hype and rumors of this new release for months now, and the product they chose to release is disappointing and confusing.

As everyone has commented, it is baffling why Apple elected to add FM Radio and a Video Camera to the miniscule iPod Nano, and omit those features from the Touch, which is their Swiss Army Knife of a product (iPod, 'Pocket Computer', gaming device, e-book reader, etc.) Rumors of "technical difficulties with the camera at the last minute" are ridiculous, as the iPhone 3G and 3GS have cameras which work perfectly. The only conclusion is that it was a deliberate marketing decision by Apple so as not to cannibalize iPhone sales.

The added bump in performance is welcome, as is OpenGL graphic support, but otherwise it's an evolutionary, not a revolutionary, release.

I don't plan to carry earphones with me at all times, so an improved speaker and built-in mic would have been nice. The addition of Voice Control and Voice Memo features WITHOUT installing a mic is utterly useless to me. I'm not going to whip this out of my pocket and fumble with plugging in their headphones just to tell it "remember to buy milk", or "lookup John Appleseed", and the bundled Apple headphones are notoriously lackluster to begin with. Now I have to shop for 3rd party headphones with a mic and iPod control buttons??

Apple is also arrogant to compare this to dedicated gaming devices just because you can tap the screen or tilt it, and a library of 20,000+ available "game" titles does not impress me when 80% of them are along the lines of "iFart", or "Shake The Baby".

I'll still buy one once they reach retail stores, because of the portable video functions, and mobile browser, but I do not think this would be a "must have" upgrade for existing Touch owners.

I'm certain to be selling this as soon as the 3GS (or better) is available on another cellular carrier, as what I am really looking for is to carry ONE device which is a; phone, music & video player, casual game device, camera, contact / schedule / e-mail manager, and Internet browser, independent of WiFi hotspots.

Okay, after re-reading this I realize that this review sounds negative. Let me be clear: this is a sleek and amazing product, in its third year of refinement. The new iTunes 9.0 offers features which, when paired with a Touch or iPhone, are incredibly useful. I would have nothing but the highest praise for the 3rd Gen Touch were it not for the existence of the iPhone 3GS, which PROVES what can be done in an all-in-one device. I was awaiting the inclusion of a camera (still or video), and am disappointed, but don't think for a moment that I'm not dying to get my eager little hands on this device! (This is my first Touch, though I have MANY, MANY clients for whom I've setup iPhones and 2nd Gen Touches. I am VERY familiar with the history, evolution, and capabilities of this product.)

I'm particularly upset about apple releasing this like right after I bought my 2G, my friends were showing off this new ipod and by comparison, there isn't much new. The voice record and voice command is great, but how much will you actually use it? wheres the camera? wheres the actual much needed improvements like GPS ? nowhere to be seen apparently. If I want a mic I'll go out and buy one for 10 times less then this, and I'll have all the same features.

Trust me when I say, don't waste your time on this. 200 dollars isn't worth a 2G ipod touch with a mic. All they really did was add a mic. Sure it's great for VOIP or whatever but is it really worth spending 200 dollars on?

As an owner of the iPod Touch 2nd Generation and iPhone 3G, I'm really not impressed with the new iPod Touch 8GB 3rd Generation that was released. It's simply the updated version of the second generation model. It has the same exact look as the second generation Touch pretty much as how the iPhone 3GS looks almost exact to the 3G. After using it for a few hours as of writing this review, I really didn't know any difference compared to using the second generation iPod Touch. Performance is mostly the same and all the features as well so there's really not too much to write about. I was really anticipating it to have a lot more since I heard rumors it would have a camera but apparently it doesn't. Overall it's not a bad device anyhow since I didn't have to pay anything for it after getting it for free from Amazon through an online survey site. I'm just going to probably sell it soon. In short, if you are considering getting an iPod Touch for the first time, it's worth doing so since it's such a great and useful device to have. However, if you plan on upgrading from the second generation to the new 8GB version, it's really not worth it at all. So if you want an 8GB iPod Touch, you should buy the second generation if you can find it at a cheaper price rather than getting the 3rd since there's no difference really.
